Using the UOS Datascope

The UOS Datascope is an excellent tool for troubleshooting the interface between your software system and field hardware devices. The Datascope allows you to view and record request for data made by UOS to field devices and the responses returned. You can also view and record unsolicited data (data which UOS did not request).
The UOS datascope must be enabled for each communications channel (each computer comm port or TCP/IP channel) before data can be viewed in the datascope window.
  1) To enable datascope operation, RIGHT click on the Channel icon Channel Icon located in the connection tree on the left side of the UOS PowerTool. A pop-up menu will be displayed. If the datascope has not been enabled before, Datascope Off will be checked.

  2) Click Datascope On. The pop-up menu will disappear. You can RIGHT click on the Channel icon again and the pop-up menu will appear with a check mark showing to the left of Datascope On. The check mark indicates that Datascope operation is enabled. Click anywhere in the tree white-space to close the pop-up menu.
  3) Click on the Datascope button Datascope button located in the UOS PowerTool top button bar. The datascope will be displayed. You should see messages going to the device displayed in one color and response strings from the device displayed in a different color if UOS and the device are configured correctly. Refer to the Datascope window shown below.
After enabling datascope operation, you have complete flexibility in controlling what protocol messages are sent to the datascope window. You can view a single datablock message or you can view any combination of messages from channels, devices and datablocks. This allows you to troubleshoot your data interface at any level.
The table below shows how to control message flow to the DataScope at the Channel, Device, and Datablock levels.
